En esta exposición he incluido varias de mis muchas series de obras, cada serie enfatizando una faceta u otra. Aunque todas mis obras están profundamente influenciadas por una estrecha conexión con la naturaleza, también son un reflejo de mis experiencias culturales, filosóficas y educativas. In this exhibition I have included several of my many series of works, each series emphasizing one facet or another. Although all my works are deeply influenced by a close connection with nature they are also a reflection of my cultural, philosophical, and educational experiences. Growing up in Japan I wanted to be a poet, however when I came to America, in my late teens, I didn’t feel my command of English was adequate to convey my feelings. Having always been interested in art, particularly the work of European impressionists, I began painting in that style. About this time I discovered the American abstract expressionists whose dynamic works touched a cord in me. In the mid-60s I lived in San Francisco where I met a group of visionary artists and my work began to reflect their philosophy. At the same time I began study Chado (the Japanese tea ritual) and was reintroduced to the deeply spiritual and philosophical principles of Japanese culture. An essential element of these teaching involves the idea of yin and yang, as well as the understanding of “ichigo ichiei” which, liberally translated means “one meeting one time” i.e., this moment can never be recaptured. For over 11 years I was strongly influenced by these principles, and it had a profound effect on all aspects of my life. During this period I had not been painting, but for some time I had been thinking about applying what I had learned to a new style of work to include all the facets of my life and study. At this point I decided to return to painting and shortly thereafter I enrolled in the San Francisco Art Institute obtaining both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in painting. Now both visually and emotionally my works are influenced not only by the introduction to innovative ideas but my studies of Japanese philosophy and culture. As I have delved deeper into my soul I noticed that the rhythm of my works was being shaped by the rhythm of the spoken word, the changing of the seasons, all genres of music, particularly the haunting music of the shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute) and of my own pulse. All these elements have affected not merely every aspect of my painting but of my entire life.
