Adiós al artista y al amigo.
El pasado sábado 25 de enero se dio a conocer el fallecimiento del artista visual Juan Castillo Díaz, uno de los más grandes exponentes del arte contemporáneo chileno. En septiembre de 2018, tuve la suerte de ser invitado por Juan a una residencia artística en su casa-taller en Svedje, al norte de Suecia. Durante casi un mes, pude compartir con el Maestro y un grupo de jóvenes artistas invitados. Aprendimos del mejor y pasamos gratos momentos realizando nuestros proyectos artísticos. De esta residencia surgió mi proyecto Mantos profanos.
Las imágenes que presento en esta muestra son una selección de muchas fotos que hice en su casa en esos días y que hoy de alguna forma siento que retratan "la presencia ausente" de Juan Castillo a través de sus espacios cotidianos y sus objetos de colección.
Una ventana con un texto escrito sobre el vidrio que se transformó en uno de sus emblemas: "La circulación de las imágenes", texto que pareciera estar escrito en el cielo. Espejos que ya no volverán a reflejar su imagen, ventanas luminosas como portales dimensionales. Las escaleras que tantas veces subió y bajó, los objetos cotidianos y la mesa del comedor, siempre generosa con sus amigos y artistas de todas las latitudes. Juan ya no volverá a sentarse en su silla a disfrutar de un buen vino y de las tertulias con sus amigos, ni a cocinar sus amadas setas que tanto le gustaban y que a diario salía a recolectar por el bosque. Un antiguo reloj Longines en el borde de una ventana, detenido, como el tiempo en la bella casa-taller en Svedje. Una antigua foto de un niño recibe la luz de la tarde, la mesa del comedor aún espera su llegada y solitarios pinceles añoran sus talentosas manos que dieron vida a su magnífico arte. Un gran y cálido amigo, generoso con su conocimiento y experiencia, se fue para siempre, dejando un tremendo vacío, pero un gran legado humano y artístico.

Farewell to the artist and friend
Last Saturday, January 25, the death of visual artist Juan Castillo Díaz, one of the greatest exponents of Chilean contemporary art, was announced. In September 2018, I was fortunate to be invited by Juan to an artist residency at his home-workshop in Svedje, north of Sweden. For almost a month, I was able to share with the Maestro and a group of young guest artists. We learned from the best and spent pleasant moments realizing our artistic projects. From this residency came my project Profane Mantles. The images that I present in this exhibition are a selection of many photos that I took in his house during those days and that today I somehow feel that they portray “the absent presence” of Juan Castillo through his daily spaces and his collection objects.
A window with a text written on the glass that became one of his emblems: “The circulation of images”, a text that seems to be written in the sky. Mirrors that will no longer reflect his image, luminous windows like dimensional portals. The stairs he climbed up and down so many times, the everyday objects and the dining table always generous with his friends and artists from all latitudes.
Juan will no longer sit in his chair to enjoy a good wine and gatherings with his friends, nor to cook his beloved mushrooms that he loved so much and that he used to collect every day in the forest. An old Longines watch on the edge of a window, stopped, like the time in the beautiful house-workshop in Svedge. An old photo of a child receives the afternoon light, the dining table still awaits his arrival and lonely brushes long for his talented hands that gave life to his magnificent art. A great and warm friend, generous with his knowledge and experience, he is gone forever, leaving a tremendous void, but a great human and artistic legacy.
